How does one get into a medical school in the UK if he is a foreigner

How does one get into a medical school in the UK if he is a foreigner?
Hello there, I am currently a student doing my IB diploma in Sweden and hoping to join a medical school in the UK next year (2010) The problem is i don't know how the application process should be undertaken if you aren't from the UK, and I also don't belong to the EU because I am a Kenyan in Sweden. If you have any idea of what I should do PLEASE tell me. THANKS!!!

What is the Best Drama School in the UK

What is the Best Drama School in the UK?
Hi there, I am looking to apply for an acting course in the UK. I have heard (of course) about RADA's reputation but I have also heard that it is not what it used to be. I've heard that Central is also very good. Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
Theater & Acting - 3 Answers

It depends entirely on the person. RADA and Central are famous but some of the others are amazing too, just unheard of. Like GSA (Guildford School of Acting) Arts Ed, Laine, Rose Bruford, Mountview, London Studio Centre Thats just some I can think of. Request prospectus' then sign up to audition at some, you'll find the atmosphere and students vary. See which you like best.
2 :
There is not a 'best drama school' in the UK. They are all too different and offer different training methods. It depends on the type of theatre you want to specialise in. Musical theatre? Mountview, Guildhall are some musical theatre specialist schools Method acting? Drama centre London AND East 15 are two schools that specialise in method theatre. Warning: If you are likely to break down in tears or have a fragile personality do not attend these places because they will knock you down then re-build you. Out of London: Royal welsh college of drama and music (Welsh equivalent of RADA), Royal scottish school of drama and music (Scottish equivalent of RADA). Posh schools; RADA, LAMDA, GUILDHALL Miscellaneous: Central school of speech & drama, Rose Bruford. There are many other schools you can research about. A word of warning!!!!!! Schools not part of the NATIONAL COUNCIL for DRAMA TRAINING (NCDT) will take your money, give you sub standard training and casting directors and agents won't recognise the institution. Only go for NCDT schools. Hope this helps :)
3 :
LAMDA are between theatres at the moment so they are touring London for two years which could be a fun way to learn to work in a lot of different environments. Just a note. I'm yet to see evidence that RADA is going downhill. The facilities are INCREDIBLE and they keep updating them (I don't know how many millions were recently spent building a massive costume dept and the Vanbrugh theatre is AMAZING) and their students still have the highest percentage of people who leave WITH agents as far as I'm aware. I've heard that Central have some very good tutors at the moment and are having increasing success getting graduates employed but you shouldn't underestimate the power of the name of RADA. So in my opinion (obviously it's subjective - the best acting school in the uk for you is the one you work best in - if you hated RADA and loved Rose Bruford but you went to RADA because of the name you'd not work as hard and get as much out of it as if you were somewhere you loved - you know?) the order of the top 8 goes; RADA Central LAMDA Guildhall Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) Rose Bruford Royal Welsh Mountview Or GSA, East 15, Italia Conti... Are also are biting the heels of my top 8. Anywhere in the CDS, CDD or accredited by the NCDT will do you well. Being in London will do you even better but it will seriously hurt your bank balance. I'm a technical student at a CDS, CDD, NCDT school and get grants from the school, the CDD, Student Finance (including full loan package) and I still eat into my overdraft. It costs about £210-ish per week to live in London & at most drama schools you do not have time for a job. I'm going to leave my school drowning in debt but I LOVE IT and IT'S WORTH IT. If I didn't love it I just wouldn't be able to justify pouring all this energy and money into it and all the crap it's throwing at my health. My advice for you is to audition for as many drama schools as you can afford to audition for, then decide where you want to go when you've been everywhere. Get prospectuses and go to open days as well. You can also look up your favorite actors and see where they trained - if you want to be like them the schools they attended might be the ones that are best for you. Another way of doing that is looking up the lead actors in your favorite films and see where they trained because if they got their agent in a showcase at their school and their agent got them the lead in the movie you love then you want to be with the same or similar agency so you can get those types of jobs - hence going to the school where the agency pick clients from.... Good luck. JJ

What qualifications do you need to get into Medical school in the UK?
I would like to be a surgeon when I'm older, does anyone know what qualifications I need to get into medical school, as in A-levels and GCSE's and do I go straight to Medical school after sixth form, or university first?

all A's a level community work genuine interest in medicine (watch shows like casualty, read mags like new scientist) and extra (sports etc)
2 :
You can study medicine at university, I've not heard of any medical schools in England. To get into a good University to study medicine you need an A at Biology and Chemistry and an A in your third subject. However GSCEs don't really matter as long as you've got a C or above in the core subjects which are Maths, Science and English.

Path of getting to medical school in UK

Path of getting to medical school in UK?
Let's say I want to become a pediatric oncologist in the UK. I did my IGCSE, and will soon do IB(International Baccalaureate). I heard IB is very prestigue, and i will get everywhere where i want thoughout the world if i get good results. Does it mean it will count in the UK? And whats next? Please include details

Find the address. Input it on Mapquest or Google Maps.
2 :
Hi, IB is good, yes but nothing that prestigious as tens of thousands of school leavers depart with this level of education. As for what you call 'medical school' in the UK, there are no 'medical schools'. Rather, there are many departments of 'Health Sciences' under which medicine appears as just one of many possible areas of academic study. As for your question about the IB counting in the UK, yes it will, But for studying medicine, you had best get A+ in at least three natural sciences and A's in everything else, Start doing research now if you want to enrol in medicine in Sept 2011. .
3 :
UK medical programs will only admit you, as a foreign student, if the medical education system in your home country is considered sub-par. So if that's the case, you can apply to UK med schools; but if that's not the case, you really cannot. My suggestion would be for you to go directly to the websites for some of the UK unis that offer medicine as a course, and see what they say about all this. You may also need to email them directly to talk over your situation.

Can I go to Law school in the UK if I want to work in the US

Can I go to Law school in the UK if I want to work in the US?
I plan on doing all my undergrad stuff at Georgia State University but I would really like to go to Law School abroad like in England. I have always been fond of the country and I would love to spend a couple of years going to school there. The only thing I am worried about is being able to work here in the US after I graduate because British Law is different from US Law. Could I still work here in the US?
Higher Education (University +) - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Why not do your undergraduate work abroad instead. It would be much simpler that way.
2 :
You really should go to law school in the country where you plan to practice law. Virtually everything they teach you is related to the laws in that specific country.
3 :
To practice law as a lawyer in the USA, you have to pass a state bar exam. That tests your knowledge of the law (USA version). So you would be at a big disadvantage going to an English law school and trying to get credentialed in our system. Think about an extra year for a master's degree in England after you graduate from a US law school, especially if you think you might want to practice in international law.
4 :
If you are an American citizen then there would be no problem with taking your law degree in the UK and working in the USA. You would have to meet the bar requirements of your state and this would likely include a US law school. Once you have been called to the bar, maybe you could take a year of so off your practice to go to the UK and do a masters in law, especially if you want to do international law.
5 :
That may end up being a hassle b/c most states require that you graduate from an ABA approved law school before you're even allowed to take the Bar. However, a lot of US law schools have programs where you can spend some time studying abroad which will count towards your JD. So maybe you should look into going to a US law school that has a study abroad program.

UK School System, how does it work

UK School System, how does it work?

I'm no expert on the matter but I believe there is primary and secondar school. I think it's similar to schooling in the US with secondary school being like high school but with 5 years rather than 4. Again I'm no expert, but I wouldn't think that there would be too much of a problem aside from transfering to any other school and whatever applies to moving to a different country. Idk how much I actually helped I'm just pretty sure th schooling is like the same but with an extra year
2 :
This blog entry is a good place to start on background info http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/2006/12/types-of-schools-school-years.html For starters it says US grade 7 = English grade 8. Education is one of those things that isn't consistent throughout the UK. England and Wales have one system, Scotland another and Northern Ireland a third. You will probably find a big difference in how schools work and teaching is handled. There are certainly differences in how exams and assessment of work is done. Also above all the differences in the education system there's the general culture shock you'll experience by being in a different country.
3 :
year 7 and grade 7 are different, year 7 is the first year of highschool, aged about 11-12

Traditional? None. Tradition implies starting from a very young age in balance, leaping, and gymnastics training, as well as basic hand-to-hand skills. Consumption of poisons and acids early on. Self-mutilation as a memory technique. Very brutal stuff. For the sake of completeness, while I haven't located any legitimate schools, there are some posers in the Brickhill area. http://www.uscninjutsu.com/ Please do not consider them.

When I went to secondary school in the UK, they invited the Gideons to hand out bibles?

i remeber that my school was a little rough and they had to walk out past some kids burning bibles. I remember keeping mine safe just in case god was real. thhan i spilt orange juice on it accidently. He didnt seem bothered. I dont think the giddeon lot go to schools anymore. perhaps you are right and they do. you wont win anything by suing them you arnt damaged by it.
6 :
Hey, all I got was a colouring book.
7 :
Oh come on! I was there for that too, and I doubt very much that they are mind readers and assume people of a certain color are of a certain faith.
8 :
Why sue? Will that get you anywhere? This world is full of heretics and hypocrites. Rather turn your back on wickedness and become truly born again, then do Gods righteous work until Jesus comes to take you home. John 3:3-5 means, "If someone wants to be born again, they should be born of water and the Spirit. Here water means the baptism of Jesus, which does away with all the sins of the world once and for all. The Spirit means that Jesus who received baptism from John the Baptist is God Himself.
9 :
All of them probably. Religion in UK schools is a tricky point. I didn't appreciate being forced to pray etc without having what I was doing explained to me. Once I'd worked out what I was doing, I was pretty annoyed that they'd forced me to do it. And if they excused kids on the grounds of skin colour, I should imagine some of those other 'pink and dark brown' children have greater reasons to sue than you.
10 :
Possibly the school, the Gideons sound fierce in the UK. They had a table an have out bible and tea at my school. They where quite kind and never flagged people down which i have seen them do before and find quite rude.
11 :
I went to a secondary school in the UK and my Muslim teacher handed me a Bible. WTF.
12 :
When I started secondry school which I think was in 2000 (well I'm 20 so it was around 9 years ago) we didn't have these gideon people come in but at the begining of our first year there they gave us these bibles and I was like what the hell do you expect me to do with this?! It was a secular school as well! Do you mean skin colour? why did they give out bibles based on skin colour?
13 :
probly wont get much from them because they dont have much money. There a non profit group that makes all there money from donations and then spends it on printing bibles to send free around the world.

yes it will because of your decision to not pay your bills. You think your credit will change like a magic wand? It will show up and you should be ashamed!

First of all unlike what the guy below said you definitely should not be ashamed of yourself unless you got bad credit on purpose. Having done loans for a very long I can tell you most people have something like this in there background and it makes you no better or worse of a person. That said no it will not follow you around, you will start fresh and new. Your SS number is only good in the US so there is no way for it to follow you.

I am a seventeen year old American very interested in becoming a doctor. I am told medical school is only about 7-8 years in the UK compared to about 11-12 years in the US. I love the thought of saving four years if I attended schooling over seas. Would this be a good idea? The UK has top flight medical education, so if you want to study there then go right ahead. If you want to practice in the US you will have to take the State Board exam for the State in which you wish to practice and you will required to show evidence that you have completed your medical education in the UK satisfactorily.
2 :
Well, first you'd have to get in. One of the reasons the courses in the UK are shorter is that they only take the absolute top academic candidates and the courses are amazingly intense. Plus of course you start on them right away as an undergraduate. No concept of pre-med. It's not normally recommended to qualify in one country if you want to work in another, but it's possible.

I want to go to law school in the UK, but I live in the US. If I go to law school in the UK would I be able to practice in the US? what are the different requirements? I know I would have to take the bar for whatever state I want to practice in, but are there any special requirements or is it state by state? If it is state by state does anyone know the requirements for Texas, New York and California?

I gather each US state has its own bar exam. www.lmgtfy.com !!
2 :
If you wish to become an attorney then you really need to develop your research skills and this simple matter should not pose a problem for a law candidate. If you obtain an LL.B. from the U.K. you would not be eligible to sit the bar exam in most States ((NY and California are two of the exceptions) because one of the requirements to sit for the bar is that you must have at least 12 months of education or hold a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school-- which if you study in the U.K. you will not have. If you decide to take and pass the bar in NY and California then you will still find it difficult to be employed since you will just be an LL.B. attorney living in a J.D. world and thus are considered under-educated and under-experienced compared to those who graduated from a U.S. law school. The idea is to obtain a law degree within the country that you wish to practice in. The better alternative for you would be to obtain your J.D. from a ABA accredited law school and then go abroad, should you choose to, and obtain an LL.M. (Master's of Law). This will save you a lot of money and a lot of heartache in the long-run.

What are good schools in the UK (preferably London) one could go to for Medical school and 4 year college

What are good schools in the UK (preferably London) one could go to for Medical school and 4 year college?
I would like to be an Ob/gyn and I'm starting to think about colleges. I live in America but I want to move to London, England or maybe a suburb of London when I graduate from high school. What are some schools, preferably in London, that I could go to for a four year bachelor's degree and for Medical school?
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

1 :
The UK has a different system. You don't have to get your bachelor's to go to med school. You're accepted after secondary school based on your A'Level results. These are done in the last two years of secondary school. After 5 years of medical school you graduate with a medical degree. I recommend if you do move to the UK doing the A'Levels and then applying to medical school rather than doing an undergrad degree. Also UK degrees are 3 years not 4 years because of credit from A'Levels. The link below shows the entry requirements in more detail: http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/medical_entry.shtml Website with different UK universities and their programmes offered with student reviews: http://www.whatuni.com/degrees/home.html Good Luck
2 :
In the UK, you study medicine at the undergrad level, for your bachelors. So you wouldn't go to a uni first, then on to med school. All the UK med programs I know of only admit foreign students if those students come from a country where the medical education is non-existant or inferior. That's hardly the case for the US. But do look at the requirements for entry into various medical courses in the UK, and see if you can find some that will admit US students. I don't know *all* of them, so there certainly could be some. If you went to the UK for your bachelors degree in something other than medicine, a lot of US med schools wouldn't admit you. Some don't admit foreign educated students at all. Others do, but you'd need to have done a year of your pre-med classes at a uni in the US. Still others would be fine with you, so long as your UK degree covered everything required in the pre-med requirements. These are things you'd want to check into. Another factor in all this is that the salaries for most doctors in the UK are far lower than in the US. If you were to study medicine in the UK, you'd pay international student rates, which are fairly high. Not has high as the cost of med school in the US, but still; high. So you'd need to think through your ability to pay those costs and/or the student loans. But don't just take me on my word on all this. Keep looking into it. See what you can discover that might work for you.

If you can afford it. The cost of living in UK is much higher than USA, so you would have to factor in those costs plus you would not be allowed to get a job to help you with finance, unless the university had some arrangement for overseas students. The big issue is, do American hospitals etc recognise UK qualifications? Or would you have to do some certification if you returned to USA? It's worth finding out first. Find out how much the Tuition is for overseas students. There are 3 semesters per year. Usually they pay the fees all at once at the beginning of each year.

All of your questions are answered on the following website which is very easy to use:- http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_family/education/access_to_education.htm#compulsory_school_age For example:- Starting school In England and Wales, most local authorities have a policy of accepting children into school at the beginning of the term during which the child becomes five. However, the child does not have to attend school until the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. In Northern Ireland, a child who is four years old on or before 1 July in any year must start primary school on 1 September that year. In England, from the school year beginning September 2011, local authorities must accept children into primary school in the September following the child's fourth birthday. However, parents may request that their child does not start school until later in the year or until reaching compulsory school age. A parent will also be able to request that a child attends school part-time until compulsory school age. Free education places for three-year-olds and four-year-olds In England and Wales, every three-year-old and four-year-old is entitled to a free early education place. This is only if you want to take up a place. In England, the place should be provided for 12 and a half hours a week. From September 2010, this should be 15 hours a week. You can spread this flexibly over at least three days a week during normal term times. In Wales, the place should be provided for at least ten hours a week. There is no minimum to the number of weeks in a year the sessions should be provided. Not all nurseries, schools or playgroups take part in the scheme to provide free early education places. Your local education authority holds lists of places which provide early education. The places may be in nursery schools, nursery classes in primary schools or reception classes in primary schools. Other places may be in playgroups, private day nurseries, independent schools, or with childminders who belong to an approved network. Even if the place would normally charge fees, you will not have to pay for the number of hours you are entitled to for free. However, if your child attends for longer than that, you may have to pay for extra hours. You can find information about schools and other organisations providing early education places at: www.childcarelink.gov.uk, or by phoning 0800 234 6346. In Northern Ireland, many three-year-olds or four-year-olds are entitled to a pre-school education place. The availability of places varies from area to area and you are encouraged to apply if you wish to take up a place for your child. If free places are not available, you may have to pay for a place, but, if a centre has enough free places, all eligible children whose parents apply will be given a place. Schools and groups in the scheme will provide information about how to apply for a place and about the education they offer. If you cannot find a suitable place offering free early education, you should contact your local education authority. For all other problems with free early education, you should contact the organisation involved.
2 :
Start at 3 and leave at 18 (recently raised)
3 :
I think you mean nursery, my daughter will start nursery a couple of days a week the term before her 3rd birthday (ie, April 2011) She will be going up to Reception the April or sept 2012 (i think) they usually don't start proper all day school till the term before they are 5.
4 :
Children start school in the school year that they'd turn 5 (so will be aged 4 or 5 when they start). The school year runs from September 1st - August 31st. So your daughter would start in the school year beginning September 2012 (assuming she's 5 in May 2013) and it would be reception class. She will be 4 years old. I'm not sure where you've got September 2011 from, but I assume that must be nursery as it's a year too early for school! And if so, she doesn't have to go by any means.
5 :
The term after she is 3, she is entitled to 15 hours of nursery provision. You can choose where you would like her to go, it can be a private day care, children's centre, surestart centre or school nursery, they will do the paperwork for you. You don't have to use it if you don't want to, and you can choose less hours or more than one setting. As for reception you will usually need to apply for a school place in the winter before she is due to start, so around November 2011 you should contact your local council, you usually get 3 choices of school and find out the result the following April, so you are ready for September (in your case September 2012). Her actual start date will vary from county to county and even vary from school to school. For example my daughter was 4 this April but she won't start Reception until January 2011 and spend the first term doing full days in the nursery, this is the policy at her school, others start them all in September.

You would have to write to the school or Education department of the school you want to go to.They can give you all the info for that school.
2 :
Most schools in the UK depending on what grade you going in, ask for either O-Levels or A-Levels, its sorta equivalent to the U.S. SATs. You should check with the school tho.

I really qant to study in an IB school in uk but?
But my parents finds the fees real expensive specially cuz of the school offers IB Diploma + boarding fee, so how do u think i can prove to my parents that it is a good opportunity for me ( other than getting high grades) or how can i convince my parents??

You may get online help from www.educationuk-in.org regarding UK. Otherwise you may refer www.studyinnorway.no for free education.
2 :
People over there actually PAY to get in IB? ... HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHA
3 :
Try to explain to your parents all the advantages that being in IB will give you. Fist of all universities love ib students and this includes top one such as oxford and Cambridge, being in IB will not only increase the chances of you being accepted in college but many courses will be taken away from you especially in your first year. The IB is a very challenging program and is more difficult than A-levels and this gives you many advantages later. It helps you develop many important skills such as time management and critical thinking and will make your academic life much easier later on. Also, some universities offer scholarships for IB students!! check the list: http://www.ibo.org/diploma/recognition/scholarships/ This might help you convince your parents if they see that the IB might actually help save money later in uni Since your parents might truly not be able to afford this school though, you could perhaps try to find another school which offers the IB and is more affordable (probably not a boarding school :)) Anyway Good Luck and just try to do your best in whatever direction you end up taking.

Texting someone who went to school in UK but still has a US mobile number.

Texting someone who went to school in UK but still has a US mobile number.?
I want to know if there will be charges if I text someone that has a US mobile phone number but is residing in the UK temporarily. They have an unlimited international plan and I have simply an unlimited texting plan with at&t. I figure since it's not an international number, I might not get charged for texting her, but its sketchy because technically she's going to be IN London. Thanks, Troy

Nope. No Charges. You're Textin A "US" Number, Not A London Number.

It won't cost you, because what counts on your end is where the number is from, not where the phone happens to be at the time.

The school is not "becoming" Muslim, it is being closed as a Catholic school and re-opened as a Muslim school. Your question suggests that the Catholics are becoming Muslim! The UK is not Muslim, and I hope it will become a Muslim country when Pakistan and Saudi Arabia become Christian countries - oh, right - people can't even openly BE Christian in Saudi Arabia can they? No matter how many Muslims there are in the UK, there will always be Christians who believe that God is a God of Love, who teaches us to love our neighbours as ourselves, it is a faith of free will.

How to get a place in a vet school in the uk?

I am going to study Chemistry, Biology, English Literature, English Language and photography in college. i have work experience in a vets surgery and stables. will i have enough qualifications to get a place in a vet school in the uk? if not what can i do to achieve this? thank you.

If you're interestined in vetinary medicine take a look here http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=6643 and select veterinary medicine. It gives you a list of courses and the entry requirements - "Entry Standards (Tariff)
This is the average UCAS tariff score for new first degree students under the age of 21, taken from HESA data for 2006–07. Each student’s examination grades were converted to a numerical score (A level A=120, B=100, etc; Scottish Highers A=72, B=60, etc) and added up to give a total score. HESA then calculated an average score for each university." As the lowest score on the list is 447 points, which is equivalent to more than 3 grade A and 1 grade C at A Level, you need to ask if you can get from Cs and Ds at GCSE to As at A level. You will almost certainly need three of the A levels to be in science / maths subjects. There are other degrees such as veterinary nursing which you can look at.

Teaching Art and Religious studies in Secondery School? UK

Teaching Art and Religious studies in Secondery School? UK?
Heya I'm currently at college and finished studying a BTEC in Art and Design, this year Im doing a Foundation Diploma in Art and design, and then applying to university. (Im currently 19) I've had a look at a few government sites but I cant seem to find a direct answer to what Im looking for. When I was at school my English teacher said that you need to train in more than one subject to become a secondary school teacher. Because I currently study art I thought that this would be the obvious route to take but the only other subject I'd be really interested in teaching would be religious studies. Would I be able to train to teach both subjects? Or would I have to pick one over the other/combine them differently?

I am in the first year of my Engineering and want to inquire if there is any top business school in US,UK or anywhere else in the world which gives admission to its MBA program without any work experience. Institutes like London Business School,Harvard Business School demand minimum two years work experience for getting into their MBA courses.Isn't there any way or relaxation in this rule whereby one can directly get into these B-Schools without any work experience.I mean good grades and internship at college.does it help?

Heriot-Watt external MBA. You would be making a mistake if you entered MBA immediately after an Engineering degree. Besides which, Engineers should be looking at a Master's in Engineering Management, or an MSTM (Technology Management), unless they want to leave Engineering entirely.

How can i set up a GSA in my school - UK

How can i set up a GSA in my school - UK?
No one in my school is out as lesbian or bisexual (we're in an all girls school) I'm bisexual but don't want to date guys, so ya. But I want to set up a GSA in my school but i don't want anyone to know that I set it up. What do you suggest? I was thinking about creating an email account and anonymously emailing the school secretary about it. Just as a rough draft "Dear [name], I have noticed that the school "[school name]" does not have any sort of support or education on homosexuality. I would like to suggest that a GSA (Gay - Straight Alliance) would be set up as a lunchtime club, and that parents would not be notified if their child attends. Please email me back about what you think. Sincerely, an adult of concern." How do you think I should do it? Send an email or what? Thanks

I should they are more known for their academic results rather than their football teams, but the best schools in London are Westminster School, Harrow School, University College School and Henrietta Barnett School (girls only)
2 :
Take a look at these league tables St Paul's would get my vote. Forgot the link: http://www.top-schools.co.uk/?gclid=CKDyuJzs16YCFQse4Qod9iMoHg
3 :
London is in England, The UK is Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & England, ( you will upset the Welsh, Scottish & Northern Irish by saying this )
4 :
Probably the best known is Harrow. It is up there with Eton and Winchester Colleges. It also used to charge the Highest fees in the UK, don't know if this is still the case. No schools are known by their football team in the UK.
5 :
St Paul's and Westminster schools are good, Harrow is also good but more on the edge of London. Sport in the UK is very different from America so isn't really relevant.

They are then at primary school for 7 years. They then usually move to secondary school where they must stay until they are 16. (5 years) Hope this helps Cx

Martial arts school (UK) for kiddies + adults - £599 for 6 months

Martial arts school (UK) for kiddies + adults - £599 for 6 months???
I enquired at a local Martial Arts school and they offered classes for as young as 4, and separate classes for teens and adults. The school grounds looked really flash, like a new gymnasium. The students there all seemed really keen and enthused - even the very young little kiddies - all shouting very loudly, doing their moves, etc. I saw the instructors and no doubt they are good teachers. However, when I was told the price, it almost bowled me over. £599 for a 6-month contract - you can take your kid as often as you like - they are open 6 days a week and do classes for every age group everyday. I suppose that's how they justify the cost of the class. They offered a free month's trial, and offered free uniform and kickboxing gloves. I have no doubt martial arts would be beneficial for my daughter - she's normally shy, needs to learn to be a bit more assertive. What's more, she saw the classes and LOVES it - kept asking me to put her in the class. The cost would mean that my husband or I may have to look for a part-time job during the weekend to help make ends meet if we put her in that school. They teach a variety of different styles in every children's class - includes thai kickboxing, karate, jujitsu, judo, taek kwon do, etc. They seem to be very professional about the way they do things. There is only one other Martial Arts school within 20 minutes' drive of our residence and I am going to call them up later, but not sure if they are as good as this one - this one does seem impressive! Both my siblings were sent off to do taekwondo since they were little, and they went to very cheap classes conducted in their local community centre (I've moved out of that area long ago so that can't even be considered!). I'm not even sure if they got as good one-to-one attention and training as they give in this very expensive martial arts school I've just seen. I looked through the yellow pages and it seems the other martial arts schools are all about half an hour's drive or more away and we think it wouldn't be very practical for us to have to travel that far for a class?? Anyway, do you think its worth paying for my daughter's tuition at this expensive one? Also, I read somewhere - some online advice on choosing a martial arts school at http://www.easternmartialarts.com/top5.htm - and the author's opinion was that children should be at least 6 before they learn a martial art. Is this an opinion shared by many?? If so, might it be better for us to wait until our daughter is 6 (i.e. next year) before putting her into martial arts school?? Thanks! P.S. Both my siblings got their black belts in taekwondo eventually, at around the age of 15 or 16. After attending those cheap evening taekwondo classes at their local community centre for nearly 10 years. So I think its possible I may not have to pay a lot of money to put my child through an expensive martial arts training school in order to get her to learn the skill???

If the school is as good as you describe, no the fee is not high. If I'm doing my math right, it would come to about $125 or so per month, which is becomming an industry standard. You have to weigh out the options (check out the other school). Also check into those schools 30 minutes away. That is not too far - I have traveled an hour each direction for classes twice a week. You may also want to check the local community centers anyway, because some schools (like mine) don't/can't put an add in the phone book. As for the age limit, you have to look at the curriculum being used. If they are really teaching martial arts to the 4-5 year olds, then it is a good program. If they are only teaching "organized chaos", it becomes a very expensive day care facility because your child won't be learning anything.
2 :
It is absolutely too expensive to pay this sum in advance. You should not pay more than £80 / month for even the most professional facility in London, everywhere else it ought to be less than that.
3 :
It does sound pretty expensive, but what worries me more is the 6-month contract. What if your kid gets fed up with it after a couple of weeks? Then you're out £600. Find somewhere that doesn't do it for the money - chances are they don't advertise in the yellow pages if they're not a commercial school, so look around local church halls or community centres. You'll probably find somewhere a hell of a lot cheaper that won't want 6 months money up front and won't make you sign a contract. You don't say where you are, but unless you are stuck in the back-end of nowhere there's bound to be something nearby. Half an hours drive to a class is no biggie, especially if you take up training too ;) 4 years old seems a little young, but if your main drive is to find something she enjoys, that gives her exercise and makes her a bit more outgoing then why not? To her it may just be a bit of fun, and as long as everyone is happy with that arrangement then go for it.
4 :
Let's see 559 pounds for 6 months works out to about 1200.00 US.The fact they teach such a variety of styles makes me think MCDOJO big time. She will learn something but what that is will be debatable. Ask them how long it takes to get a black belt if they say anything less than 3 years and that is based on 4 lessons a week in one system save your money and run.

I very much doubt that they will shut the schools its the government making mountains out of mole hills as usually. It will just prolong the swine flu in the UK.

I dunno..but i really hope so! We are on our summer holidays at the moment so they might have got the vacination before we go back in September ..but there is a good posibility that it may be shut for a while..but i personally hope it isn't becuase i start my Gcse's and that would just bugger the whole thing up.

well they might! I live in the U.S, NY to be exact. and schools all around my school shut down. My school should have shut down, but it was to close to summer break. Are u guys still going to school, or are you on break! If your on break they might just extend the break.
4 :
lucky enough it's the summer hol's! I reckon the government should take all the action necessary to combat this. I find it awfully sad that innocent people who were healthy one day are dying the next:(
5 :
no because 1 or 2 outbreaks of swine flu is not a problem especially if they are adults they will close school however if a child has actually been in the school with a positive case of swine flu.
6 :
i dont think they will shut the schools no.. i dissagree with that but there aint a lot we can do about it.. if they did shut the schools there would be a lot less cases especially as they are sayin alot of the cases are in th younger aged kids!!! if my sons school has a case of swine flu i wont be sending him in as i want to stay clear of it if possible untill the vaccination comes out for it..
