junior school children are aged from 7/8 to around 11. It depends when their birthday is in the school year

Junior school children are age eight to ten years old (the American equivalent of Third to Fifth Graders). Children age five to seven go to Infant school. Children age eleven to sixteen then go onto to high school. Junior schools are only found in England and, even then, in some areas, they have primary schools instead which combine infant and junior schools (so kids from five to ten go to school in the same building).

Are you referring to a private high school? You basically take an exam or two. I don't know about the UK though. In the US, we take the ISEE or the SSAT for high schools and fill out the applications available online or by mail. You'll first have to contact them for a information booklet and go from there. There are many private schools out there, but you'll want to pick the right ones. There's actually a private prep school counterpart to the college Ivy League. Some safe bets would be some of the top-notch New England Schools like Exeter, Andover, Choate, etc.). These schools all have websites that have all the information you'll need. The admissions people are pretty friendly too so don't hesitate to call them. The admissions standards are pretty high. I don't know how they compare your grades to if you're international though nor do I know what the average scores are. Aim for greater than 90th percentile on the ISEE though in all the subjects. You'll also need some extracurriculars. They like ECs that really stand out, not so much the basic ones everyone has.

Go to the school's website and read the information, it will tell you how to apply. Some schools will have online applications, some will have print out applications that you mail to the school, and a few will have to send you applications. Also, you should ask for an application packet even if you apply online. Sometimes there is information in there that isn't on the website. Usually you just give your address online and they'll give it to you. In many big cities in the US, the application process for September 09 is almost over. Usually application due dates are in early January. Although some schools take applications later. Also, many schools cannot take foreign students, but some can. Will your family be moving here? Educating children: Private tutor, State School or Private (ie Public in UK) School. What is your opinion

Educating children: Private tutor, State School or Private (ie Public in UK) School. What is your opinion?
I would particularly like to hear from people who were educated at home by parents or private tutors as I think this might lead to gentler, more original people. Otherwise please give your point of view.

You're confused. Both my kids go to private schools in the UK. Neither of them is at a public school. I'm frankly not that interested in my kids growing up to be gentler and more original. I want them to grow up to be happy and successful in whatever area they choose, and able to cope with the world around them.
