UK Secondary School Teachers and Educators: Do you still teach grammar and punctuation

UK Secondary School Teachers and Educators: Do you still teach grammar and punctuation?
My wife told me today that grammar and punctuation is not taught at secondary level in the UK. Is that true? I can't believe it is.

I am a secondary school English teacher in the UK. Yes, we still teach grammar and punctuation, although sadly, many students seem to forever plateau at the full-stop stage. I teach in fairly deprived area and it's really hard to get across the finer points of semi-colons and subordinate clauses when lots of the kids never read for pleasure. I honestly believe that the best, if not the only, way to learn punctuation is by reading a range of fiction.

Religious test for admission to a Catholic School. UK

Religious test for admission to a Catholic School. UK?
I have just recieved a letter from one of the secondary school's i applied for for my child in Sept. We are applying on the non religious acceptance as we are not catholics. My child has to sit a religious test next week and pass to be accepted. What Q's will be asked and what prayers should we know. Has anybody gone through this last year or has knowledge of the test and what we need to know. Your answers would be greatly appriciated, thank you. U.K I chose this school as one of my top 3 as i want my daughter to go to a Religious School. My Mum was Catholic and Dad Orphadox and so am I. I have not baptised my child so she can choose which way she identifies herself most, orphadox/catholic. She identifies herself as Irish. Im fine with this as long as she believes in God and obeys the 10 commandments i dont mind if she becomes a Catholic and not Orphodox like me. I dont believe in changing Faiths this is why also i gave her the opportunity to choose. I have a great understanding of my religion and so does she, its more the prayers i am looking for and things that are diff with Orphadox religion

education in all schools should be secular
2 :
Why the heck do you want to send your child to a catholic school in the first place? They're just going to try and brainwash said child... and its going to be a nightmare from start to finish. You'll be much better off just finding a nice, normal, secular school.... Rest assured... the questions won't be worth answering.
3 :
no
4 :
You'll probably need to know the seven heavenly virtues and seven deadly sins. Presumably the lord's prayer (although that might be protestant). Also your child should do a bit of a background check on Jesus so s/he doesn't fall over in that category. To be honest you probably don't want your child going to a religious school if they aren't of that religion.
5 :
I can't help you there...I'm Christian, not Catholic. I do have one question....Do you have to pay to send your child to this school; and if so why pay money to send your child to a religious school not of your belief?
6 :
I've never heard of any Catholic school requiring any student to pass a "religious test" before they can be admitted. A placement test is the only thing I've heard of, but that's just to make sure the child is up to date in their education and to place them in correct classes. Try this website for a list of prayers that you can look at. =) http://www.scborromeo.org/prayers.htm
7 :
Fair question, but why would one send a child to Catholic School without either being of that faith or desiring to be of that faith?
8 :
I am a religion teacher in a Catholic school, and went to Catholic schools through college. I have nerver heard of a "religion test" reqired for admittance, just an ordinary academic test for placement. I'm willing to bet you are mistaken. Most Catholic school have a percentage of non-Catholics in their population, and we welcome them. We instruct them as we do all of the Catholic children, and love hearing about their various faiths. We do not try to convert them in any way, but respect the differences in beliefs. Catholic schools are universally known for their high standard of education, and more importantly, high standards of Christian values exemplified and expected. I wish you good luck.
9 :
"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name (NOT THE NAMES) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (St. Matt. 28:20). Many Christians begin to learn about the Trinity through knowledge of Baptism. This is also a starting point for others in comprehending why the doctrine matters to so many Christians, even though the doctrine itself teaches that the being of God is beyond complete comprehension. The Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed are structured around profession of the Trinity, and are solemnly professed by converts to Christianity when they receive baptism, and in the Church's liturgy, particularly when celebrating the Eucharist. One or both of these creeds are often used as brief summations of Christian faith by mainstream denominations. One God God is one, and the Godhead a single being: The Hebrew Scriptures lift this one article of faith above others, and surround it with stern warnings against departure from this central issue of faith, and of faithfulness to the covenant God had made with them. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD" (Deuteronomy 6:4) (the Shema), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Deuteronomy 5:7) and, "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel and his redeemer the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." (Isaiah 44:6). Any formulation of an article of faith which does not insist that God is solitary, that divides worship between God and any other, or that imagines God coming into existence rather than being God eternally, is not capable of directing people toward the knowledge of God, according to the trinitarian understanding of the Old Testament. The same insistence is found in the New Testament: "...there is none other God but one" (1 Corinthians 8:4). The "other gods" warned against are therefore not gods at all, but substitutes for God, and so are, according to St. Paul, simply mythological or are demons. So, in the trinitarian view, the common conception which thinks of the Father and Christ as two separate beings, is incorrect. The central, and crucial affirmation of Christian faith is that there is one savior, God, and one salvation, manifest in Jesus Christ, to which there is access only because of the Holy Spirit. The God of the Old is still the same as the God of the New. In Christianity, it is understood that statements about a solitary god are intended to distinguish the Hebraic understanding from the polytheistic view, which see divine power as shared by several separate beings, beings which can, and do, disagree and have conflicts with each other. The concept of Many comprising One is quite visible in the Gospel of John, chapter 17, verses 20 through 23. God exists in three persons The "Shield of the Trinity" or "Scutum Fidei" diagram of traditional Western Christian symbolism. This one God however exists in three persons, or in the Greek hypostases. God has but a single divine nature. Chalcedonians — Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants — hold that, in addition, the Second Person of the Trinity — God the Son, Jesus — assumed human nature, so that he has two natures (and hence two wills), and is really and fully both true God and true human. The singleness of God's being and the multiplicity of the Divine Persons together account for the nature of Christian salvation, and disclose the gift of eternal life. "Through the Son we have access to the Father in one Spirit" (Ephesians 2:18). Communion with the Father is the goal of the Christian faith and is eternal life. It is given to humans through the Divine union with humanity in Jesus Christ who, although fully God, died for sinners "in the flesh" to accomplish their redemption, and this forgiveness, restoration, and friendship with God is made accessible through the gift to the Church of the Holy Spirit, who, being God, knows the Divine Essence intimately and leads and empowers the Christian to fulfill the will of God. Thus, this doctrine touches on every aspect of the trinitarian Christian's faith and life; and this explains why it has been so earnestly contended for, throughout Christian history. If I major in nursing can I be accepted into law school in the UK

If I major in nursing can I be accepted into law school in the UK?
I know you can get into law school (UK) with different undergraduate majors, such as English & Accounting. But what about nursing? I have a 4.0 high school GPA, and have already earned alot of college credits. I'd hate to be a nurse, but I also know that if I was to be a lawyer I would have to live with my parents longer, or so they claim, to afford law school. Also, nurses are high in demand at the moment so its not one that would leave me jobless. In addition, I hate it here in the US and all my friends live in the UK. I feel so lonely, and my parents control everything about my life. It's come to the point that I've been cutting myself and contemplating suicide. My parents are pretty much forcing me to live with them, and I know I would be a financial wreck if I left. I cant even drive. Please help.

becoming a lawyer is a RIDICULOUS choice. Lawyers aren't in any KIND of demand. They breed like goddamn ROACHES!!! Nurses, on the other hand, do something useful. But if you hate nursing, then don't do it. Where did you ever get the idea there were only two careers in the world: nursing and being a goddamn lawyer? Forcing you to live with them. Forcing how? What good is money if you're going to be unhappy?

Soon I'll be finishing a science degree (BSc) and if I get a 1st I'm planning on applying to medical school. If this happens (touch wood!) how would I go about funding my tuition fees and general living expenses? At the moment I have a loan. But when I enter medical school I'll be 22. Anyone done the same? How did you fund yourself in medical school? P.S. It will no doubt be different in America, so only people with knowledge of UK university systems please.

How does it work for students wishing to stay in the UK after school

How does it work for students wishing to stay in the UK after school?
So I've heard about something in Scotland called fresh talent: starting in Scotland, which offers two years after school to situate yourself, and I've also heard that the Greater England area offers one year after school. I'm curious as to how the whole process works, and essentially, what I would do at the end of that year [What level of job would one need to be working in? Would it be as difficult to stay as it would be for someone newly entering? etc.]

What happens after secondary school in the UK

Right.... During the Last 2 years of secondary school ("years 10 and 11", ages 15 and 16 approximately), you study for your GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) usually in 10-12 subjects, some compulsory some optional. Coursework takes place over the two years, and there are final exams at the end. Grades are A*ABCD etc. Only grades A* - C count for anything. After GCSEs a lot of students carry on to do A-levels. A levels take 2 years and are divided into two parts - AS and A2, usually students take 4 AS subjects, drop one, and continue the other 3 to A2 level. A-levels are used as criteria for admission to university. A levels are graded ABC etc (note no A* at A level). Clever people can also do Advanced Extension Awards in some subjects. University applications are made through a centralised system - UCAS - with a single application form. Applications are made before the A2 level exams, so you and the university have to try to guess how you'll do at A levels. Offers are made before A level results come out and are conditional on achieving whatever results the offering university wants. Some universities require AAA or even AAAA results. University grading is by "degree classifications" a 1st is the best, then 2:1 (upper 2nd), 2:2 (lower 2nd), 3rd.

What's it like to make the transition from UK secondary school to a US high school

What's it like to make the transition from UK secondary school to a US high school?
I'm 17 and currently in year 12 in the UK (the equivalent of junior year) and I may be moving over to the US in the summer, and completing my senior year there. I was wondering what it’s like to make the transition, because we only take 4 subjects in year 12 & 13, is it easy to go back to taking lots of subjects again? And, other than the obvious, in what ways do British and American schools differ? Thanks for your help.
Primary & Secondary Education - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

You should not be required to take "lots of subjects" when you transfer to the US high school system, however, you do need to ensure you have all your UK credits properly documented and placed in an official transcript so an evaluation of your transcripts can be done by the US School you intend to go to. American schools typically go from 0800 to about 1530 hours each day, but that can vary depending on location. Schools typically run from September through the following June, but that can also vary. Some schools start in August and end in May. There are some year round schools as well, where breaks are shorter but the same number of days (180) and credits are required to move on to the next level. US schools are usually big on sports, but the norm is baseball, football (US), track and field, basketball, and tennis. Some may carry water sports, wrestling, volleyball, and others. Cricket and Soccer still haven't caught on nearly as much as in the UK. Good luck.

since you're in the 9th grade and presumablly still live at home, then your parents will have the ultimate say so.

I have been to 10 different schools in 7 different US states. If I were you, I wish I would have stayed in one school. Trust me, it sucks to transfer from school to school. Stick with this one.
3 :
me too bro, i dont like my school either, all the girls here are well to put it bluntly WHORES try asking for a school transfer but then again im in the US i got no idea how that works over there
4 :
A nation develop with educated people and good education make the people educated. So,you have to analyse the quality of education in your school.
5 :
I don't really know the district laws in the UK but if you really want to change schools you can start looking at private schools and boarding schools. There are many private schools and im sure you can find one to suit your personality. Many of these private schools offer scholarships and often help you secure a strong foundation for your future. If you cant get into a private school or cant afford it then I would suggest broadening perspective of school. I would say most high schools are similar. They are just as good or bad as you make it. I know that sounds a little cliche but I truly believe if you dedicate yourself to working hard, having fun, and making friends, then you may have a better time at your current school.
6 :
If there are any other schools in your area, you should try to move to one of them. Call another school, ask them if they have any places left in year 9, and just get a application form for another school.

4 :
unless your school is terrible i suggest you stay there. In school they will support you much more than college and make sure you stay on track with your work and such.. In your school, you are comfortable and know your way around things, if you start a new college, it is a big risk to take because you might hate it and take long to settle in, ending in you failing your A levels. Good luck!

The government do send out documents, but it's best to make sure that the local education authority are aware of her because sometimes kids get missed, especially if you don't live in the area she was born in. If you ring the school you are interested in, they probably keep a list of kids who they are aware of and make sure they get all the forms at the right time. Note: I'm assuming it's a state school. If it's a private school, you will have to apply directly and the sooner the better.

Civil/Structural Engineer-Which subjects to study in a UK secondary school for 14 yr old

Civil/Structural Engineer-Which subjects to study in a UK secondary school for 14 yr old?
I want to become a civil/ structural engineer to work with designing/building bridges, highways, dams and building architecture. I'm 14 years old in a UK secondary school and need to choose the relevant subjects as a first step towards this. Which subjects should i choose? Maths, physics, chemistry, resistant materials, design & technology, any other? Thank you. Waiting!

Math is fundamental. Physics follows.
2 :
Math, math, and math, followed by physics, chemistry, computer programing will be very helpful. I'm from the US so I don't know your educational system that well but the ability to communicate and speak publicly will also be important. Also take some classes that do group projects if you can so you learn to work in a group. By far though, all the math you can get. If you don't enjoy the math, pick a different profession. Hope this helps.
3 :
hello from canada, from my point of view, here would be some recommendations: - "tech" class, building things with different materials (balsa wood, acrylics, vacuum forming), hopefully some exposure to AutoCAD, CNC, electrical circuits. - CHEMISTRY if only for the atomic theory -- but anything you can get in highschool the better. Civil (and lots of mechanical) engineers need to learn about chemical bonding and enthalpy when choosing materials to build structures with. - ALGEBRA, matrix theory - CALCULUS, the more you learn about differentiation and integration and can start memorizing trig identities, integrals and derivatives the better. work it in with flash cards, burn them permanently into your mind while you have time to do it - PHYSICS, physics, physics, physics, physics - COMPUTER SCIENCE to learn the basics of varaibles, looping and decision structures, and using the computer as a tool to solve problems. engineers need a very solid foundation in all of the sciences except biology, physiology, anatomy or any of the more organic side of things. the minimum requirements for entry to my program were at least 75% in all of the following: grade 12 completion with at least SIX U-level credits in Calculus, Algebra & Geometry, Physics, Chemistry, and English (English/Anglais I preferred) best regards i_have_a_really_long_nickname
4 :
Congratulations on your choice. Engineers are always in demand, and I do not see the demand lowering anytime soon. I am registered Engineer in in Training (having just passed my F.E.) after having spent three years studying Civil Engineering in California. You will need A LOT of math. The more the better in fact. I use geometry every day. I am also on my computer a lot as well. Understanding Engineering programs such as Autocad and Solid Works is a must. Also look into communications or speech...... It is very hard to make an adequate presentation without a good speech background
5 :
It doesn't really matter until you choose your A levels but you should ideally choose at A level: Maths (mechanical variant if possible) Physics Another Science - Chemistry/Design/Biology I did biology as the degree I wanted to study was in Medical Engineering. For Civil probably chemistry would be better. Most universities would want 3 A level Sciences at about a B or above. At GCSE do whatever you enjoy as long as you can do the science A levels.

What should I expect from my daughters school in this situation..Bullying/absence?? (uk)

What should I expect from my daughters school in this situation..Bullying/absence?? (uk)?
My daughter is 6 years of age,in her last year at primary school (uk). From October 2009 she was being bullied by a younger boy..Coming home with her coat ripped, big bruises to her body and generally shaken and upset from being kicked, punched while being held by the bullies friends etc each and every break time.As a result of this, there were many a morning where she was either late or absent from school as she was so scared to go to (literally shaking and hysterical). She also has chronic lazy eye where she has to attend regular hospital appointments as they/we are working frantically to correct her vision before it 'sets' at a certain age and if not corrected could result in blindness in that eye..which in the end,in then straining her 'good' eye could result in total blindness!. School however have been,I feel, total a**holes and are threatening us with education welfare etc as my daughters attendance falls below their attendance targets!. I can easily prove her hospital appointments and the like but they have not recorded a valid reason for absence when our daughter has been away from school for the bullying OR hospital appointments. We have approached the school several times over this and all they do as far as the bullying is 'log it in the incident diary'..wow! I really need to know where I stand,legally..This school has done nothing regards the bullying, are hasseling me with threats of welfare officers etc because my daughter has to see the opthamolagist regularly..and therefore when she is ever off due to illness they say I should send her in regardless,so they can get the attendance marks, and they will send her home if she gets 'too ill'.?????? Please ,any help or opinions would be appreciated. Me and my husband have been to the school and demanded something done else we will report them and go above them.As for informing the parents,...thay are not the sort of people you would challenge if you know what I mean..I am 6 months pregnant,I cannot go throwing my weight around, possibly provoking physical violence,(which is prob ehat we would get from these parents)??? Plus...response no.1...If my daughter starts school at 8.45am..has an appointment at 1pm,and we also have 2 other children to get to school at all different times..AND get our 6yr old to the hospital 7 miles away and back again (while also 6 moths pregnant)...how easy do you think it is,Don't insult me as to infer I am Not doing my job?????

Well why haven't you gone to the school and DEMAND they do something instead of letting your child be afraid to go to school and keep her home? That's ridiculous! Why haven't you contacted the kids parents? You let your child have bruises from this kid and do NOTHING????? It's up to YOU to get to the bottom of this and if the school isn't listening then go over their heads! You don't just keep her home and let it go! She doesn't need to be out of school all day over a Dr visit! You've not doing you job as a Mom in getting the problem resolved or making sure she in school when she should be!
2 :
What a crap sounding school, Its not fair but maybe taking your Child out of that school would be best and reporting the school for doing nothing about the bullying
3 :
Well i think you should invite me onto the scene :) I'll do something about it to that little nasty.... I'll somehow find out his second name 4 youu even if it weens asking ALL ov my mates....IT'S WELL WORTH IT....not just for your daughter but to see how to sort out a problem!! mummy xxx

to answer your question: there are very few Chinese in the UK, those few are rich or middleclass who moved from China, so they are likely to have smarter children, it's the few clever ones who are in the UK. also have YOU NOTICED that girls get better grades than boys yet what men have invented and and contributed to society is way more than women ever have? PROOF that there is a difference between being a nerd and clever also it says ''(A*-C grade)'' for all we know the majority of Chinese people in the group may have 5 C's yet the white British may have 5 A*!!!! but as I said, the main reason is there are many super qualified people in China (because there are so many people in China in general) and so there are so many super qualified unemployed, so they come to the UK people who are super qualified are usually smart, smart people usually have smart children Think about it, you only see the high achieving Chinese people's kids, not the kids of the millions of Chinese that applied for a UK visa and got rejected.
4 :
because chinese parents will whip them with rods if they don't get an A
5 :
cause their parents push them to do well
6 :
the eyes in it
7 :
Our white heroes were simply just letting the Chinese pass because they have more important things to do. They must save the world and they need all brain power to do so.
8 :
discipline,
9 :
ya their parents are very VERY STRICT.......same goes for the indian students .... i am indian but my parents are NOT nagging ....they have given me my space .....but still i need to get respectable marks.....wateva.....
10 :
Because respect and discipline is a big thing in their culture so they don't mind listenting to teachers 8 hours a day. My only goal in school was to get out ASAP w/o getting caught. Edit: LOL who thumbed MLK down!
11 :
Paren'ts are strict And because their language is harder to remember. Its not as easy as English.. So they have a easy time remembering stuff. Oh and there arent many Chinese here in England...i'd say more Vietnamese.. Probably a lot of Chinese coming to study at University i don't remember in Secondary schools though Girls do better. Go girls lol.. Easy
12 :
Because you have to be upper-middle class to wealthy to immigrate to the UK, especially if you come from China. Think about it, you only see the high achieving Chinese people's kids, not the kids of the millions of Chinese that applied for a UK visa and got rejected.
13 :
Chinese students generally perform well because their parents are very strict when it comes to the grades they get.
14 :
they eat fish. jk, culturally, in their families academic/business sucess is extremely important and parents are often very strict with their children academically and set ambitious goals for them.

I graduated high school in UK and would like to go to Korea for Uni?
Because I need to be 18 in order to get into a Korean Uni and I am 16, would i have to go the high school first? I really need some info about how korean education system works(grades/degrees) ! because I think its really different from UK??Do you need A levels as well in Korean uni( I have only got GCSE's? Yh, secondary school then( year 11 graduation)

No, you didn't. We don't have graduation from high school in the UK. GCSEs are not a high enough qualification to get you into university in general. If you need to be 18, they'll expect you to have the qualifications that people in the country you live in take at 18. For the UK, that's A levels.

no. u can get early admission

Do not be directly concerned about entering med school at this time. Your emphasis should be on doing well in high school so that you can enter a good University.Take as much Chemistry, Biology, and Math as you can. Take advanced classes in these area if you are eligible. Repeat the process in college. When you reach you junior year in college you can begin considering applying to medical schools./

white boys are failing in school? (UK)

white boys are failing in school? (UK)?
If you think this is me being racist, think again. Just today it was on the news that white boys are under achieving than any other ethnicity in Britain today. I actually posted this because there are alot of posts on this site saying how bad black kids do in school. What do you think about it? check the link! http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=54146&in_page_id=34 http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=54148&in_page_id=34&in_a_source= To bigdonut72, yes the first link states that it is due to poverty. I dont know if u even checked the second link before YOU made such a statement.

blacks are doing the best in schools now and whites are doing poorest. its a sad role reversal. 10 years ago whites were the top dogs. :( wish i was black the study also shows that Africans have more greater IQ than European people. .
2 :
Interesting you brought this up because I have a link showing that Black Afircan girls are outperforming white boys in the UK; however I still dont see it as that they can't achieve http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/3517171.stm
3 :
wow i dont care- who cares what race theres stupidity in every race there just so happen to be alot of dumb whit BOYS BOYS should sum that up for you
4 :
your statement only applies to poor, disadvantaged white boys. Additionally, it only said chinese and indians are performing better. You should look for a broader study which includes all ethnicities, all social ranges and probably includes both genders before making such statements. futhermore, it states that they drop out before graduating. does it go on to mention actual test scores? does it state why they drop out? does it compare life situations down the road?
5 :
The only problem is that most people in the UK dont care about education. So if you dont care about education it is much higher percentage that you are going to fail.
6 :
I actually heard this on the radio this morning. I can see how this is true. Most black boys I know are very determined. A lot of the black boys in the UK have African parents, who are very hard-working and urge their children to do well. Lot's of white british people don't care as much, but you get differences from both sides.
7 :
Interesting. Do you think it has something to do with economics? I imagine it has an impact on the kids. On a wild note, should the parents get an education on educating their kids?? Since you live in England yourself, what do you think the reasons are??
8 :
Girls are usually less into the gangsta type thing, which is what a lot of British boys (of all ethnicites) are into. They are into mugging people, getting high, stealing, and beating people up. They make it a point not to work at school. I used to live there and I know. Poor girls are different though, they normally do pretty well in school.

Is it more expensive to study in a US grad school than that in a UK grad school as an international student

Is it more expensive to study in a US grad school than that in a UK grad school as an international student?
I am an international student in US, paying 30000 usd tuition a year. I am just wondering will it be cheaper to go for a UK grad school after my bachelor degree?
Studying Abroad - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Depends on if you are going after your masters or PhD. If it just a masters, then it is definitely cheaper to go to the UK because it only takes about 1 year. In the US, it takes 2-3 years on average. So even if tuition is higher (I'm not sure if it is or not), you are paying for less years. However, I'm not sure about PhD costs in the US vs the UK.
2 :
Can´t think why you would want to, unless you could get into Cambridge or Oxford, because otherwise, you wouldn´t be getting as good an education. US has the best Universities, overall, in the world. There are only a few exceptions...Cambridge and Oxford, Sorbonne, and a couple of others. And, no...a Master´s in the US does NOT take 2 - 3 years! Not unless you are going part time! And in the UK, a Masters is included in the five year degree, like the rest of Europe, is it not? a Master´s in the US only takes a year, if done correctly, to possibly 3 semesters. But where you go is going to be up to your interests, too. And, if you have been earning and saving USdollars, then Britain is going to be PRETTY pricey! If your money is from some other country, you might be better off in Britain...so many questions to figure out!
3 :
Well what you're currently paying depends on the university in which you're studying. I don't pay that much tuition at my university here in the US, but then again, I'm an undergrad. I definitely know that it is very expensive for law and med school here. It really depends on what you're going to grad school for. Like the other person wrote, what you're studying determines how many years you'll be there. I definitely think that it's cheaper in the UK. Check out this website: www.gradschoolsabroad.com. Hope this helps!
4 :
My former mentor used to maintain that it is best to read for an MA in the UK and for a PhD in the USA. I still believe that he gave me the best piece of advice ever, regardless of the cost! Nowadays, Scandinavian countries, Sweden in particular, are also offering less expensive though just as efficient training as their couinterparts both in Europe and across the Atlantic. And there the girls have such wonderful complexions! Good Luck!

Was anybody ever caned at a UK private school during the 1990's?
My friend's brother went to a private school during the 1990's that had continued using the cane and slipper after they had been banned in other schools. Corporal punishment is banned throughout the UK now. http://www.corpun.com/uksc9803.htm http://privateschool.about.com/od/profdevelopment/i/beating.htm http://www.nospank.net/caning.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporal_punishment

For jobs that typically require an MBA, management experience within Canada or the USA is necessary to be a credible candidate.

What should I pack for a UK boarding school

What should I pack for a UK boarding school?
So basically I'm gonna go to a co-ed boarding school in the UK and it already provides a bed, chest of drawers and all that? But what else should i pack including clothes-wise and toiletry-wise? I basically need all the help i can get as i haven't been given a check list yet!! THANKS!

I suggest you bring a vacuum cleaner, a thermometer (to put on the outside of your window), everything you own. You may think it's over packing, but it's not. At my boarding school my first year I didn't pack anything; and it suffered a lot. I never got to go home and I never really got my clothes back until Thanksgiving vacation. Bring a lot of food, a lot of soup. Toiletry wise, bring a shower basket (to put shampoo, etc in) and everything you do in the morning (teeth, face, etc) Bring wash clothes and towels and bath robes. Towel's including face towels. Bring posters and pictures--it will make your room more desirable to be in. I don't know if it's allowed at your school, but if it is then bring a mini fridge.

Why does private school in UK and Australia make there students wear speedo for swimming

Why does private school in UK and Australia make there students wear speedo for swimming?

Swimming & Diving - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It is a hygene issue probably. They want to make sure that the swimsuit you use is used for the pool only, not street wear.
2 :
Besides the private schools it's also state schools and public pools and spas. It's for public health and safety and liability rule. Most pools here in Australia now even require you to wear a swim cap also before entering the pool. When you go to school in the UK or in here Australia you have to wear a school uniform when you attend school. At school a swim brief (speedo) is the required swimwear uniform all guys here wear during swimming diving or water polo and surf lifesaving training.
3 :
The hygiene issue mentioned is important. The optimal swimwear for swimming (in classes or otherwise) is your own skin and nothing else, however, with situations in some schools where that is not possible the next best thing is the brief swimsuit (speedo type). It provides for the proper coverage of the genitals while allowing the freedom of movement you need for your legs. Boxer style swimwear and board shorts don't allow for that leg movement.

what are the high school diplomas in the UK

what are the high school diplomas in the UK?
I intend to attend a UK boarding school in 2011, but I saw there were a few high school diplomas, and I don't really understand the difference.
Studying Abroad - 4 Answers

The usual school leaving qualifications are GCSE and A-levels. GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) are taken at age 16, and A-levels (Advanced Levels) at age 18. If you are at high school/secondary school, you will study for your GCSEs between the ages of 14 and 16. And your A-levels after that from 16-18. High school in the UK is between the ages of 12 and 16. Then it is called sixth-form between the ages of 16-18. If you choose to stay at school, you can either go to a sixth-form college or stay on at the sixth-form department of your school.
2 :
sugar.kiss is right =) i'm just going to add - sixth form, i.e. education aged 16+, isn't compulsory. Any age under that is. How old are you? And do you know what school year you will be starting in 2011?
3 :
6th from isn't compulsory but a form of education until 18 is. Students take GCSEs, AS and A2s. If you want an alternative and want to risk it not being accepted at all universities (mostly top top ones don't like them, but thats something you could risk, i am :S) you can take NVQs, diplomas etc. They are alternatives which rely more on coursework than exams. For diplomas you can take the normal kind (don't know anything about that one though) or apprenticeship ones (or are they all apprenticeships? I'm taking business and admin apprenticeship one), which rely on you to get eg 50 days work placement and then you get your grades from the work and a few written 'exams'. Hope this helps.
4 :
Ignore Cherry x She obviously has no idea what she is talking about - the age for leaving full time education is going up, but currently it is still 16. We don't actually have hih school diplomas, the nearest thing to that would be IB but most places do GCSE's, these are exams in differnt subjects but the exams are the same taken in every school that uses one exam biard, There are about 5/6 exam boards, they st the exams, not the schools. So say you take Edexel maths GCSE, everyone else who takes that exam sits the same paper, regardless of which school they go to.

should uk school kids swear an allegiance to the uk

You wouldn't wish that upon them, would you?
2 :
Why should British school children swear allegiance when 90% of us are already loyal to Queen and Country.
3 :
You mean Pledge of allegiance? as far as i know they don't even have one. but if i'm wrong, they should, not because we do though, just because its for your country.
4 :
only uk citizens can answer this. but if you aren't loyal the country you live in why are you in the said country, doesn't make sense
5 :
Forcing kids to say any kind of pledge of allegiance does nothing. Young children are not capable of understanding the significance of saying such a pledge. Besides it has been proven, forced indoctrination does not make anyone more patriot as an adult. Being treated like a decent human being does. Donna
6 :
What on earth for? Having to do that suggests that the USA is seriously worried about the loyalty of its own citizens. And given what the USA is like I suggest that the UK is better off without it. Anyway, no oath in the UK would be "to the UK". Oaths of allegiance in the UK as sworn by the police, the armed forces, and newly naturalised citizens, are to the Queen and her heirs and successors according to law. That is the proper position given the position of the Queen as head of state and representative of the nation as a whole, and feels far more meaningful than the US pledge of allegiance as used in schools, which is to "the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands". How do you pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth? The phrase "one nation under God" was added in 1954, which surely goes against the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion. It seems disgusting to me that very small children should be made to recite this pledge each morning when they cannot have any idea what they are doing.

Yes and all she needs is the adapter for the plug. Make sure it is grounded. Not a power adapter but the prong adapter you can find at radio shack and ebay(cheaper). All power supplies will step up from 110 to 240 I used mine in turkey. Like this http://cgi.ebay.com/US-to-EU-Travel-AC-Power-Plug-Adapter-Converter-NEW_W0QQitemZ330255289604QQihZ014QQcategoryZ88759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If you look at the powersupply it will say 110/240 so you just need a travel adapter US to UK.
2 :
Your only worry has to be the connection to an electrical outlet. For this, you need to check for two things: you need a converter for the power cable (like you mention before) AND also make sure the Power Supply for the laptop can take the 220V from the UK since by default it will be setup for 110V for the US. If it doesn't have a 110V/220V switch, I'm afraid she won't be able to use it.

Oxford accepts international students, most unis do. International students have to pay more than UK students so they like international students for a start just because of that. these are some recommended ones, http://skorcareer.com.my/blog/10-top-medical-schools-in-uk-20082009/2008/06/16/. Scholarships, i myself living in england don't understand them. There aren't many available and i'm not sure where to start. Ehm you wouldn't get financial aid, its extremely hard for UK students to get aid as the uni is so cheap (compared to US) anyway, but europe well germany france etc is free. try oxfords website for help. http://www.ox.ac.uk/ . and try here for international students at oxford,, http://www.ox.ac.uk/international/international_support_services/index.html.
