I'm home schooled in the UK and having trouble making friends who go to State School?
I have lots of friends but all of them go to Private Schools.

If it helps, I'm home-educated too and all my friends are either fellow home-ed'ers or they go to private schools. Even the friends I have online, from overseas, are, without exception, at private schools. I have never even met anyone who goes to a state school. That's not deliberate; sometimes it's 6 months or more before the question of school arises between us. It just seems to be...I don't know...maybe home-ed'ers and private school kids attract each other, share a common "world view", come from a similar place educationally or hold a similar philosophy in life. Anyway there's no actual law that says you have to source x% of your friends from the state education system (or any other artificially contrived system). Concentrate on the individual and not concern myself with how, why, where or when they are schooled; that's my only friend-finding strategy. (Mind you the closest state school to us is...I don't know where. There are certainly no state schools within a 500 km radius of our house; the only one there ever was up here was closed down nearly 30 years ago.) If, for some reason, you feel the need for state educated friends, as opposed to just friends, why not join a local sports team or drama group or Scouts or Venturers or Young Farmers or one of your local Combined Cadet Force groups; and see who else turns up? Or find out where state school kids in your area hang out and go join them there? Or go and watch the weekend footie games at your local school and make the effort to get talking to any other kids who turn up? Or call the school and ask if you can use any of their sports facilities etc out-of-hours? Or ask if you can join in with the school's co-curricular clubs and activities? (Don't know about where you live but here homeschooled kids are entitled to call their local state school and ask the principal if they can join the school's out-of-school clubs and activities.) Or go to the local library etc after school and see who's there. You need to find out where the local state school kids go and what they do when they're not stuck in school...and then make the effort to put yourself in their way.

As a parent I'd actually rather my daughter didn't spend any more time than necessary with state school kids because their social skills are so poor. I see a tendency to nasty, bullying behaviour and oneupmanship that I really don't want her picking up.

Get into a UK medical school without top GCSE results?
If you've achived excellent A Level results (AAA/AAB), but did poorly in your A Levels for whatever reason and only managed C grades, how will this effect ones application to a medical school. Are they that bothered about GCSE grades or do you have to have a perfect academic record straight through to be deemed a serious candidate? poorly in your GCSE* not A levels, typo sorry.

They may use it as a filter - just to wash people out who didn't get good grades. However, medical schools are massively oversubscribed, and what they're more likely to look at is your other experience - what extracurricular activities have you done? Have you done work experience in a hospital? All this is required if you want your application to be considered. You need to be top calibre in every way and prove your motivation before you ever apply. If you only get AAB at A-level you can probably kiss goodbye to getting into medical school, unless your application is truly exceptional in other ways. Resits are always an option though, so don't lose heart.

Is there any way I could get a scholarship or something to go to school in the UK?

Right now in the UK, especially where I live (in london) living costs are very high, but some of the best uni's in the country are located here, UCL, London school of economics, Brunel, Imperial College, Kings, and so on. How ever going to university is actually cheaper than some counties, courses cost £3145 a year and run for 3 or 4 years, and for the first year you should be able to live a bit more cheaply by living on campus. Student life isn't cheap and its hard to fund yourself. I should no, I've still got student debts from studying at UCL and Brunel, I'm 32, though I did get my Ph.D only 4 years ago. I'm not sure about how you would go about getting finical aid, how ever you may qualify for some grants from the government, most student do, in some form or other, also student loans do have a very low rate of interest. Because of my parents income at the time, I was eligible for a grant of £4.50 whoppie.

What happened to the CAT tests that you take in Year 7 in secondary school in the UK
What happened to the CAT tests that you take in Year 7 in secondary school in the UK?
Ever since I took the, I haven't heard from them for years now and they are reported to never be brought back to you. Is there any way to obtain those results and what was the point in even taking them if they're never going to be given back to you? Also why aren't they given back to you?

What is the cheapest law school in the UK
What is the cheapest law school in the UK?

Queen Mary, a school that is reputable, is relatively cheap compared to other universities located in central London: 9000 pounds. More popular schools, like Bristol and LSE cost about 11,000 pounds--if you can afford it, it is definitely worth the extra cost! **Note that the figures I gave were this year's tuition. For entry in 2010, the tuition will be slightly higher (maybe by a few hundred pounds?!?)

Hi i am in my third year at NYU. i plan on attending medical school to become a Child Psychiatrist. Is it possible to go to Medical School in the UK and then do my residency in America? I want to do it at University of Cambridge. no lol. i am American. I attend NYU. Can i go to Medical School in UK and then still get a job in America!?

Certification of shit countries doesn't mean anything in the US. But even mexico doctors could get jobs in the US, so a Cambridge doctor wouldn't have a problem.

Is it possible to become just a Media Studies teacher at secondary school in the UK?
I would like to become a media studies teacher since it is my favourite subject and im doing very well in it, so is it possible? at my school all of the media teachers are english teachers too but i would love to be able to teach just media studies after being inspired by my own media studies teacher.

I would assume, but don't limit yourself to JUST media studies or you'll be limiting your job options. I don't know how it is in the UK, but English teaching jobs are hard to come by in my part of the States. It's truly a waiting game. Even rarer are the media studies jobs, which would most likely be classified under "Librarian/Media Specialist" here. So, my advice is to major in English education, minor in Media Studies, and have the ability to teach both.

Are the school cafeteria in UK and USA really tasteless?
I have heard that the school canteen in UK and USA are not delicious before. Is it true? And what kind of foods are there in the school canteen? Please tell me :)

Yes, except pizza, which still doesn't taste like normal pizza. You have to remember that schools have to spend the least and cater to the tastes of the most people. That usually translates as bland food made with inferior ingredients.

I thought they were very good when I went to school but over time things change. When my children went to school they found that in the elementary grades they were given outdated food. When my son tried to bring home a bag of chips to show us the date they took it away from him. Since this was food we paid for they had no right to take it from him either, but they did. I no longer have faith in our public schools lunch programs and question much about our public school system in general. There is not just a problem with the quality of the food but I feel serving food on styrofoam plates and trays is hazardous to our children's health. The ingredients used to make styrofoam are toxic. Why are U.S. schools serving food on it?

YES! Everything is really bad. We had bouncy chicken nuggets and hot dogs that were green on the bottom. Pizza is usually okay. I don't remember much because I stopped eating a long time ago. I remember in elementary school, the only thing I liked was their hot pockets. they were actually pretty good. HOPE THIS HELPS!

But people dont want to risk it and find it easier to buy a poptart or cookie with a slushie. Very unhealthy. ANd the only way to get a salad is if you get to the front of the line first, and when you do get one they can be very disgusting. I remember at my elementary school they actually fed us really good. They types of food availible are: Fries(with cheese if you want), Chili cheese fries, Burger, Cheese burger, Spicy Chicken sand winch, pizza, salad, Maxx sticks, chicken nuggets, Deli sandwinch, slushies, apple juice, water, pineapple juice. They dont sell sodas to us anymore. You can also probably get poptarts and cookies. and there is usually a teacher who sells candy and sometimes pizza but usually after school. The food is probably not as delicious as before, but at least they feed us :) kinda...lol

For a masters degree: LSE does offer some funding to foreign students. You need to ask them about that. Otherwise, you'll be paying for it in loans. For a PhD, LSE should fully fund you, plus give you a small stipend.

There is the Fulbright scholarship program which the US dept of state provides to allow the best students to get their masters in the UK for Free. It is very competitive and you need to work w the program adviser assigned to your undergrad university. http://www.cies.org/ There is also the Marshall Scholarship program which the British Government provides to help the best US students come to the UK to study their masters for free. This program is also very competitive. http://www.marshallscholarship.org/ Also check w your local Rotary club as they many times provide scholarships for students looking to study abroad or do their masters abroad. Note that all of these programs involve a very long planning process (and understandably, considering the amount of money they pay out) so if you want to receive any of them you are not looking at attending until the 2011-2012 school year.

You need to bear in mind though that different pupils of different abilities will not necessarily study the same things. I do not know if pupils are still put into different classes accoridng to ability, but they were when I was at school, and so different ability groups actually sat different exam papers. This means that the teachers would teach a class only the things that their ability group would encounter in an exam. At my school you could only get a grade A in the GCSE maths exam if you were in set 1 for maths (the top ability group) so those kids were taught a lot more things. If you were in set 2, the highest grade you could possibly get (even if you got 100% on your exams and coursework) was a grade C, because they didn't try to teach the lower ability kids the maths they needed to get a grade higher than that. The exam that the top set took would cover everything that the lower set covered, plus additional stuff too. I don't know if things are still like this, I am talking about the late 80's early 90's, and I think a lot of changes were probably made to the national curriculum after the Labour government came in in 1997. Going back to your question my point really is that it is quite likely that not every child in the UK will be taught analytical geometry. I don't remember doing any of this and I was in a lower set. But if the child is in the appropriate achievement group they would be looking it this sometime between 14 and 16. Obviously many kids don't get past basic addition, subtraction, multiplication etc so would never be presented with an area of maths like this. In terms of grades here,Grade C in the UK is considered "adequate", showing a good basic grasp of maths. Many employers will say that job applicants must have grade C or above in Maths and English.

I do not know if pupils are still put into different classes accoridng to ability, but they were when I was at school, and so different ability groups actually sat different exam papers. This means that the teachers would teach a class only the things that their ability group would encounter in an exam. At my school you could only get a grade A in the GCSE maths exam if you were in set 1 for maths (the top ability group) so those kids were taught a lot more things. If you were in set 2, the highest grade you could possibly get (even if you got 100% on your exams and coursework) was a grade C, because they didn't try to teach the lower ability kids the maths they needed to get a grade higher than that. The exam that the top set took would cover everything that the lower set covered, plus additional stuff too. I don't know if things are still like this, I am talking about the late 80's early 90's, and I think a lot of changes were probably made to the national curriculum after the Labour government came in in 1997. Going back to your question my point really is that it is quite likely that not every child in the UK will be taught analytical geometry. I don't remember doing any of this and I was in a lower set. But if the child is in the appropriate achievement group they would be looking it this sometime between 14 and 16. Obviously many kids don't get past basic addition, subtraction, multiplication etc so would never be presented with an area of maths like this. In terms of grades here,Grade C in the UK is considered "adequate", showing a good basic grasp of maths. Many employers will say that job applicants must have grade C or above in Maths and English.

Depreciation of Horses in Riding school accounts UK?
Its an equestrian business; has about 6 horses used for riding lessons etc. Would you trat the horses as assets and depreciate? They dont compete in competitions or races and therefore would deplete in value. A friend told me to include then as stock; but they're not for resale. any ideas

they are considered to be biological assets and have their own set of accounting standards. I think you would include them as an asset but i am unsure if they are subject to depreciation. You would need to check the accounting standards of your own country.

Do i need permission to take my 4 year old out of school nursery (uk only)?
Im taking my son on holiday next week but his nursery teacher said i needed to fill in a holiday request form from the school office and i did that and they said they would let me know if had permission or not. Can they do this? My son is only 4 and i thought his nursery education is optional

It seems they can because you registered you child at that school. A child becomes of compulsory school age when they reach the age of five and, where a parent has elected to register their child at school, they must start school in the term following their fifth birthday. His nursery education is indeed optional...in both directions. If you don't want the place, or don't use it, they'll simply give it to someone else. However, since you registered your child at that Nursery, you are now taking a place someone else could potentially have used, and therefore Yes they can ask you to complete holiday forms, etc. If you take your child out of the group without their permission, you could effectively lose the child's place, since if you aren't going to abide by their rules, they'll reopen the place for another child.

I'm American with a 3.5 gpa and am trying to go to LSE- they don't have any scholarships available for students from the states, accept an academic merit award- and doubt I'll get it. Anyone know of specific grants/funds that I can get?

I don't think foreign students get grants or anything, unless it is a scholarship (but you said you might not get that). Sorry. The aid is only in place for the 'home' students. That's why I didn't apply to American uni's, because I couldn't get any aid for being from a foreign country, and I Was told most scholarships are for sport-y subjects, and I want to do Maths lol. Congratulations for getting into LSE:)

i am 12 years old and live in the uk i would love to start acting ,could anyone explain how i get started and how much it would cost my parents roughly to get me started in a drama school ? and how much it would cost per term afterwards?or is there a free way of getting around the cost of doing this?

The best way to get seriously into drama is to go to a normal secondary school and take Drama to GCSE. If you do well in your other subjects, once you have done your A-Levels you can apply to specialist drama academies or a drama course at university. The one at Bristol is particularly good.
